Pro 18: More on Immobilizer reprogramming

CASE 2: IN THE CASE OF Faulty/Bad immobilizer unit. In this case it is usually of two options which is either the immobilizer unit is only reprogrammed or the immobilizer unit is replaced with a new one and programmed to the ECU and keys. The method taken depends on the kind of fault in the immobilizer unit, the brand/model of the vehicle or the technician recommended option.

HOW TO KNOW AN IMMOBILIZER UNIT IS FAULTY
Fault codes indicating it may appear.
Vehicle would not start even if all other systems are in good state.
Ignition light would continuously blink and beeping of alarm showing a problem in the immobilizer system.

During the reprogramming of the immobilizer unit the following steps are taken:

Connect your diagnostic tool/software with immobilizer reprogramming feature or immobilizer reprogramming tool to the vehicle, this is done by plugging in the diagnostic tool into the vehicle OBD port.

Start up the diagnostic tool/software: this is done by turning on the diagnostic tool, if it is the type whose software is in-built. But for a diagnostic tool with external software the software for this operation has to be started separately on the computer that helps to run the diagnostics.

Select vehicle brand and model: the vehicle to be worked upon should be selected also the model and every other details of the vehicle should be correctly chosen.

Select the immobilizer reprogramming option: this is done next after the vehicle brand and model has been selected. For some diagnostic tool with immobilizer features one would see this option under the sub-menu “systems” or a similar sub-menu that indicates “erasing of immobilizer data” or “reset immobilizer data”, it could also be on the main menu. But for an immobilizer reprogramming tool it is much easier to access, this option is usually located on the main menu with better mode of description.

Input required vehicle details (VIN and others): various vehicle and part details would be requested, this include VIN, serial numbers and parts numbers. Fill in all requested details and continue the procedure. In other cases the diagnostic tool may be able to scan for these details itself, in such case one may not be required to fill in any detail.

Generate or purchase passcode or PIN: the passcode or PIN should be generated or purchase from the manufacturer or service provider. In the generating of tis passcode or PIN it is required that the various details such as VIN should be provided. Also the generation process can either take place using a web platform or the option in the diagnostic tool/software.
Input the passcode or pin generated and continue the procedure, this would lead to the beginning of the reprogramming process of the immobilizer system.

Input the keys and program them: after the completion of the reprogramming process by writing new security code on both the immobilizer unit and the ECU, then insert the key into the ignition lock, initiate the reprogramming process which could be found in a sub-menu like “reset transponder key”. It usually last for about five seconds after which repeat same procedure for all keys. The key is the programmed with the security code in the immobilizer system once this is complete the ignition light blinks indicating of successful registration of that key.
Test the vehicle with the keys.
